Is there anyway to automate the process of whacking these engines entirely so that theyll always run?

Ive tried turtles with crescent hammers and they work fine for the most part but i want something 100% reliable.

If they are not plugged into a redstone energy conduit, they are basically filling up with internal power and over-loading. Plugging them into conduit makes them 'smart' and slow down to what is being requested.

So does that mean that theyll run forever as long as they have lava without overheating with those conduits? Ill have to work up to a magma crucible again.

Yep, they'll slowdown to .4, which is basically the loss rate from conduits. Uses an incredibly small amount of lava to keep going at that point though.
