JUST got FTB. Went caving, got a double chest full of new stuff, but I haven't made anything new yet. Where do I start?! I'm totally overwhelmed here! Using the Mindcrack pack btw if it matters at all.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Usually people work towards some system of auto-processing your ores. Try for a pulveriser and induction smelter/powered furnace, and a hobbyist steam engine for early power (needs water!- don't let her run dry.)

Also make a few stone sickles and a hoe. Sickle+grass/leaves is awesome, and set up a small farm for food.

First thing I do is make an automatic storage system. Then I hoard stacks of gems, gold and ores, like a dragon..

I think the TE steam engine is better since it won't explode if it runs dry, otherwise I agree though.

You can try starting with a Peat+Wheat farm from Forestry, though you'll need to invest quite a bit to get both 100% automated. Peat is a great fuel source though, slightly better than coal/charcoal and once production gets rolling it's self sustaining.

btw, I recommend using one of the 4 vanilla wood types (Oak/Jungle/Birch/Pine, I think) because some recipes will only accept those as valid wood. Redstone engines for example, which are important for early automation, only accept Oak/Jungle/Birch/Pine planks in their recipe. I love the Redwood trees and how easy they are to harvest, but I'm now running into trouble because I can't use their wood for some basic things like that... Though once I get an Oak tree farm running that'll be solved, but until then I'm kinda cramped on wood even though I have plenty.

The Hobbyist Steam Engine runs for so long on a single bucket of water, though, that you could have a single aqueous accumulator hydrate several of them, or if you're putting water in manually, the Hobbyist Steam Engine takes much less babysitting. You just need to remember to only put water in when it is off, or to check if it's running dry first.

Some suggestions:

There's a whole bunch of wikis and guides in the post by ICountFrom0. These have a LOT of information you will find to be invaluable. You can also check my sig for some guides on various mods, with the caveat that is my personal perspectives, and that I freely admit I prefer some mods over others.

When you are first starting out, here's some tips:

  • Look for Rubber Trees. If you are in a swampy biome, this is fairly easy. They're most readily recongized by the dark trunk that might have orange nodes, the lighter colored leaves, and the spike of leaves sticking straight up from the trunk. Look up the recipe for a Treetap, then use the treetap (ONCE!) on the orange node(s) you find to get Sticky Resin, which will be needed to get started with IndustrialCraft2
  • If you can't find any, don't worry. Look up the Pulverizer and Powered Furnace in NEI, then check my guide for Thermal Expansion for more details.
  • Clay will be useful, as will Glass. Red Cobblestone can be turned into clay with three buckets of water.
  • Redstone is needed for just about any mods to get going, so your first day or two won't be much different, other than keeping an eye out for surface resources like Rubber Trees or Oil.
  • Different ores spawn at different 'strata' of depths. Fortunately, REI's Minimap has your y axis listed conveniently on it. Look around 50ish for copper, 30ish for Tin and Gold, then 10ish for diamonds and redstone.
Welcome to the wonderful world of modded minecraft. We're proud to have you be one of the Lucky Ten Thousand

Now, processing automation is easiest with thermal expansion, but has the most potential with factorization. You will be blending machine sets, don't worry about it, everybody does.
I would say the "most potential" goes to GregTech with the new Industrial Grinder and other changes from what was in the Beta A pack. It depends on which pack he's using. It also depends on what exactly Shiny Ingots will be used for eventually in Thermal Expansion, because those will not go far without throwing pretty much everything into the Induction Smelter.

If you have Gregtech enabled, Shiny Ingots can be converted into Iridium, so do that for now I guess.
As mentioned before, I recommend starting off with a Thermal Expansion ore processor, and maybe throw in a basic sorting system using Buildcraft, then start building an epic fortress/castle/palace/cave dwelling where you can fit all of your fancy new machines.

What I did (coming from vanilla straight to FTB) was pick one mod and learn it at a time. Go to the wiki of the mod you're working with and do any tutorials and read through the wiki while making stuff to get yourself familiar with it. You'll definitely get overwhelmed if you don't do that. Start with the larger mods like IC2 and Redpower, everything else is easier to tackle after that. Don't concern yourself with being super efficient right off the bat.

The op said he's playing the mindcrack pack.... it is similar to the DW20 pack in the first 5 minutes.

The diference can be seen just by trying to do a Diamond Drill in each mod pack.

Lets say that the mindcrack pack will crack your mind just in that particular item if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

cumpz

I made a top priority keeping a steady income of Ore. And now i just finish setiing up my RP2 powered quarry .... nice.
