First off this is not snark or trying to be rude just something I have noticed. Seeing how the rise of Kirin's config file has become pretty popular and Redlore also made a config file for the mods on a server to me this seems to be the new way to go. I find it wonderful that such ingenuity has been brought forth. Now people just need to make a config file for a set of mods and they are pretty much all set.

A question that arises for me is that there may sooner no longer be a need to name mod packs. Just set out a config file and call it a day. The user does need to download the mods but that is more of looking through forum posts then a major hassle.

Thoughts or opinions?

True, somewhat.

I don't get the point of modpacks (why do you need to get a very specific modpack with a little logo on it that says it's better than ultimate with a single mod removed?).

Configs I do understand however. It's a pain to edit configs and it's more tedious than looking at the list of mods in ultimate and thinking "Boy, I don't like that secret rooms mod. Gonna remove that... Ok, modpack finished. It's called Zultimate, totally original! Better go grab an axe and go kill some people if they don't start using this totally official and original modpack created by me instead of their own modpacks".

What would be nice is a huge modpack that you can't launch by default that has every forge mod out there pre-downloaded. You can pick preferences (base modpack consisting of IC2, BC, RP2, etc.) and then add or remove mods without having to go out and download them. And if they did some sneaky things with the download links, they wouldn't need permissions for any of the mods since they aren't actually distributing it themselves. Also, in that case, all the modpacks (except very official ones posted on the forums) would be classified as private, so you wouldn't need to worry about permissions. Or any exploding fucking bees.

I see your point but is it really that hard for someone to download the mod(s) themselves when they have a config file all set for those mods? From what Kirin said in one thread the biggest wait for him is downloading. Editing is rough but by no means a omg type thing.

Your idea of a core group of mods is awesome but someone with the right tenacity can make a config file that works mods that may not fit otherwise. As you said no worry about asking for permission as the end user needs to download the mods themselves as they have a config file to do the work of fitting mods together.
