Hi there, im slowly getting to grips with various mods and have had an idea about what I would like to do, im just not sure if its possible.

Im happy to start in a new world, so just let me know which pack would do this best.

Firstly ill have a home base somewhere with some small machines in but nothing too industrious. Then, preferably in some wasteland id want a major industrial area, smeltarys, power creation, heavy manufacture and an oil refinery. Also id like to utilise some ocean based oil spouts for my oil then have that automatically shipped preferably by train to the refinery. This is all heading to the eventual space launch.

So in essence I think the most automated bit would be the train system loading liquid into trains moving them from the oil station to the refinery and unloading there and then returning for more oil.

Is this possible? and which mods and pack would you recommend that I need?

<edit>
Hmm, just thought the only pack with galacticraft by default is Lapitos, so don't worry about the space part I can just add it to a mod pack without pams harvest craft in (as I think that's the only conflict atm)

For the oil train part, check out direwolf20's episode
The oil field is very nearby there though. If it's a lot further away you would need chunkloaders that covers the tracks all the way

If you decide to take a shortcut through nether, he's also done that:
A lot more complicated though, there are several videos of it I think

I guess Railcraft is the most important mod here.

There is a chunkloader cart as well which means you don't have to chunkload the entire stretch of railway. You can use item loaders (railcraft) to load them with pearls if you want to automate that. Incidentally, the same item loaders can be used to automate refuelling the locomotives.

I think that direwolf uses normal carts on their own in those videos. I recommend setting up trains to transport your things, especially if you are going long distance. The advantages are, you don't need to have powered tracks, and you can move more at once because you can link carts together. Routing is better because you can use the ticket system to direct your trains through junctions (if you want that finer control - it is optional).

The main disadvantage of using trains, in my opinion, is that it can be difficult to automate the loading/unloading of multiple carts in the same train at once. The task is greatly simplified if you have a good redstone mod like project red or Minefactory reloaded and even computercraft. Its fun to automate though.

One last note. If you have mystcraft installed and have access to crystal portals these make long -distance rail transport very easy by cutting out as much of the long-distance section as you want. You can set up a nether nexus with linking books if you like to route your stuff a really long way but using only a small amount of rails. Trains or individual carts work well with this method.

Moderately worse, a single pearl lasts a long time - 12hrs I think (although I never play on servers and I often cheat the admin anchors in anyway so maybe mine is not the best perspective.

I still think it is better to use an anchor cart than to load up an entire stretch of railway, unless if it is very short.

I do like the mystcraft portal idea, however I do want to see the trains zipping across my terrain :)

HAd a look at direwolfs video and had a quick experiment on my test realm, with shifting one cart its easy enough, but I would want trains heading too and fro with multiple wagons on them :)

Its going to be fun to experiment. We have minefactory reloaded, but ive never looked at that , also id love to play with compucraft but it confuses the hell out of me.

On a side note, does computer craft add any world gen? If not I might just plug it in.

I like what you're trying to do here. I've never really liked item teleportation to begin with. Part of the challenge to me is to transport materials from your mines/pumps/whatever. I've always had a thing for logistics and such in games, and building a railway network to transport items sounds really cool to me and is something I've wanted to try out for a while.
I get that it's hard to do between mystcraft dimensions though since they are completely independent from Overworld. The Nether is at least locked to Overworld in a 1:8 distance ratio, so you still have to travel distances there.

It was cool to see how they coped on Forgecraft 3 with the ruleset they had in place with item teleportation banned, and autominers only allowed in a quadrant of the world quite far away from spawn.

There is no computercraft world gen, and it uses very simple recipes (you can make a computer with just some stone, glass and redstone).

I don't like to self-promote (actually, that is a lie I do) but a while back I submitted a build to the community showcase that where I use computercraft, railcraft and mfr together. In it, there is a method for unloading several chest carts at once. You can use a similar method to unload liquid tanks.
