looking at getting a lenovo m58p

it has

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 Ghz Processor
  • 4GB System Memory
  • 160GB SATA Hard Disc Drive
Will this be fast enough to support an ftb direwolf20 server, with at max 15 players or so, if my 2megabit upload speed can even host that. Most likely it will be used as a LAN server, and will probably just be myself

if this is in the wrong section please move it, i couldn't find anywhere more appropriate

The processor looks to be low end, the memory is a little lacking for 15 players and the low capacity hard drive means its likely quite old and slow.

I think you could do 15 players if you had better upload speed. and a solid state drive. With 2 megabits per second upload, I would suggest a maximum of 3 people. You might be able to do 4 - 6 depending on if everyone is living in the same chunks.

ok, the internet part was only going to facilitate 3, the rest was going to be maybe at a lan, so it will run 15 people with an ssd?

I can't promise you anything because I don't have an exact copy of that laptop, but with an SSD it should be just fine for 15 people. I would also highly recommend buying memory so the laptop has more memory and installing a Linux OS on it, they tend to be more lightweight.

I would encourage people to work together though, having players sharing things like lava pumps or auto crafting is a huge help.

May I ask what your budget is? A good desktop for $400 could easily beat that processor several times over.

My budget is $400, and I was initially looking at building this: http://i.imgur.com/bz5FVz7.png It had a relatively small footprint, and is very expandable,
but considering the lenovo m58p is only about $150 and has an even smaller footprint I thought I would ask. The 8400 with 3ghz I assumed would be ok, but 4gb of ram is maxed out.

Cheaper would be better, and smaller form factor is a plus. and just in-case, I am in Sydney Australia

I would suggest going with a much cheaper case and getting a better processor.

Here is quick build that is around $400: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1zQgo

It is much more powerful than that AMD build, and the processor has a much better upgrade path. The reason I picked out 8 gigs of memory is there is no reason to wait on shipping again if you ever upgrade, and there is a $30 mail in rebate. I also picked out the best low end CPU cooler available, cheaper processors like the I3 or that AMD chip don't always come with a cooler which is needed.

I know you said a budget of $400, but a machine that costs between 4 and 5 hundred dollars is really the sweet spot for perfomance. Consider saving a bit more money so you can get a SSD, more memory, or even a better processor. These 3 things make a huge difference on a Minecraft server, a high quality machine makes for a more enjoyable experience for the players.

um, that build is going to be much dearer in Australia. If you go to pc part picker, in the top right you can set the country to Australia, you will instantly see that an i3 4130 will set me back an extra $30, and most of the parts will have this added "Australia tax".

There is also limited supply here, and some of those components can't be easily sourced from retailers within the country. Shipping is also a hassle, most e-tailers will charge upwards of $10-20 for each transaction, and this will add to costs massively, and as such getting them all from the same sources is easier, I usually prefer pccasegear over mwave.
To be honest although I have the money to invest a lot more into this, I don't want to go over $400, I set this as a hard limit for myself so that i didnt get carried away.

The smaller footprint is a must, I don't have much space and was hoping to get something I could mount literally under my desk, If i was going to invest in a midi sized tower i would opt for a bitfenix prodigy, just cause they look bad ass

See, your sort of creating your own problem here with the case. You say you have a hard budget of $400, but you want to spend on extra on case because of space and looks.

Don't think of this as getting carried away, think of this as the bare minimum for well performing FTB server.

i was just saying, the case i picked initially on http://i.imgur.com/bz5FVz7.png was picked because of it's size and that it already had a psu. the point i was making with the prodigy is i don't want a big ass case, i want it to be small

For 10 you will probably have low to no lag, the ram is good enough but put a world limit, cpu I would max it at 20 before bad lag occurs. The main issues is the internet, you need more speed.

If you have any computer knowledge use a VPS instead of a minecraft host (minecraft hosts rip you off). Also to limit world size use plugins, you can get bukkit to work with bukkitforge and mcpc. And not to disagree with DZcreeper I think a world size from 5000 to 10000 would be a max, but 1000 2000 is probably best.

I'm making the assumption the 1-2k world size and the max 10 people is for the lenovo box?

Well that is if you wish to generate every chunk in that 2k boundary. Larger worlds need more ram but 4GB is a lot for 15 players so I think maybe a 10k world max.

I seem to be having some trouble getting world border to work, so i just drop the 1.5.2 version into my mods folder? that is 1.7.2b

I have added mcpc+

Do I need to do something else
