Is this cave normal?

I was out mining, and I came across a massive cave. I have seen 2 other caves that are very similar in height and length, and it made me wonder if it was somehow added by a mod? I have never seen anything like it in vanilla, and now I have several at once. It's on the 1.5.2 wg pack. It extends a lot more at the dark end, and from what I can tell there is also a lot of space underneath it.

I dunno when it was added, 1.4.7 I think.

Huge massive caves.

There are also small 'hubs' that are little structures that spawn in the ground and connect cave systems. Not as big as that cave though.


You can't get those caves in the end or in the nether I don't think. Although you might get them in the end.

I guess I'm lucky to find a lot of them then, they have loads of ore. Makes sense that it would be vanilla, last time I played un-modded as 1.2.5.

I guess it's a vanilla thing then, but I do a lot of manual caving, and the last time I saw something bigger was caused by 3 intersecting ravines, not as a single cave. I suppose it could be a lot of those large circular caves that you find that have all spawned together? Does not seem like it would be a common thing, and I said, I have found 2 others that are very similar.

I think there's a line in the code that makes sure that caves can't run parrallel to eachother.

They are quite common, you're just pretty unlucky with your mining. Not common, but decently common.


There tends to be lots of ores in those big caves, by the way. Especially near bedrock.

Never in my whole life seen anything like that.

well, I have seen those 10 or so block radius circular rooms that connect caves but not a gigantic nuke hole like that one.

Ive even seen bigger ones.

I wish there was a mod that made ALL caves like that, normal caves with their very convenient 4-5 width are boring, i would like to need scaffolding to reach he ceiling of a cave!.

I started finding these about the same time they added ravines.

As someone that does a lot of caving I run into them fairly often. as stated not super common but I'll run into them in most long cave systems to some extent.

actually now that I think about it... I have been into those, but most of the time they go from the surface down 20 or so blocks, and curved a bit. But never seen one underground.
