Hi,

My friends and I are pretty much power players who really like the FTB mod packs. However, it seems that every time, once we reach a certain level in the game, the server self destructs in one way or another. Never the same way though.

We are tired of doing massive builds only to have the server crash. Any thoughts?

FYI, we have the largest server spec available on Nodecraft.com with full upgrades so resources should not be an issue.

Is there such a thing as a stable FTB pack?

Wait, you're running it on a 4gig server? That's why you're crashing. I do 5 gigs and my server has 3 people, and I'll upgrade that as the game goes on if need be.

Also, 4 gigs for $39.98 is absurd. Strongly recommend changing server providers.

Been happy so far, but it's a bit early. This is about the 8th one I've tried and my favorite so far. I'm paying something like $22 per month and that's only because I ponied up the extra 5 bucks to get a i7-4790k processor.
 
So I've been running modded servers for over 5 years. Crashes and TPS lag are just the norm for modded minecraft. So my main suggestions are backup, lag investigation tools and learning to read crash reports.

I can't stress the backup feature enough. This will save your world in the event of something major you can't find a fix for. And crash reports will usually (not always) give you a good idea of what caused the crash. If it is a ticking entity or block they can usually be fixed by a forge.cfg edit a reboot then another edit to revert the forge.cfg change. Then the TPS/server can't keep/lag issues are usually best diagnosed with something like Lag Goggles. That way you can profile the server and see what is chewing up all of the CPU cycles.

And lastly I'll 2nd what @Drbretto has said about the server memory. I run all of my servers about 6 GB for 1.12 packs and I've had very few issues.

BTW: if you want to see a server brought to its knees take a mob farm that produces loot bags then pipe that a loot bag opener that feeds into a diamond max size colossal chest that is connect to your RS system. The RS system will absolutely flip out and lag out the server. I just experienced this in the recent StoneBlock pack for 1.12. It took some experimenting from on my players to locate this one. But sometimes you think you building something neat and cool but turns out to be very bad on the server.

No matter which pack it is, and which mods, you will have to constantly be vigilant about what you build. Moderation and common sense in choosing what and how to build is the only way to keep your world stable for longer periods of time. This is pretty contrary to the common evolution of modded minecraft, where it seems to mostly be about ever increasing numbers of things.
When on a server with multiple people you will have to be quite aware of what goes on. Even vanilla mechanics can completely wreck a server if it is used the wrong way. Doubly so with mods. And it only takes one person on the server with some bad habits(that might not appear wrong/bad) to wreck the whole thing.
I don't know if OPIS is still a thing for new versions, but using a tool like that regularly to pre-emptively seek out trouble spots before they become serious issues is a must.

And yes, you will need more than 4 GB or RAM for multiple people in the same world for extended time. When I play alone in my very long term worlds(6months-years+), I have to allocate 6GB.

Agreed. I run to layers of backup on my worlds. One at short intervals with rolling replacements, one with long term intervals that I keep for months.

It really does not have to be very complicated setups which can ruin a server. Prime examples are those involving the mob AI. I have seen people do chicken->egg->chicken farms in the spawn chunks, people filling small pens with hundreds/thousands of animals, or simply just building near a village and thereby causing villagers to breed out of control. The vanilla game has tons of mechanics with no safeguards.
 
Hey man, me and my friends have done many servers together. There are about 5 of us and we have enjoyed crack pack 1.7.10 and enigmatica 2 (1.12) the most out of all the packs we have played.
