This might sound like a weird question, but it only just dawned on me that the reason my ftb was lagging so bad was because I had spawned in a forest, and the number of items lying on the ground (mainly saplings) was enough to give me about 3-4 fps. So is there a way of getting rid of them (other than waiting 5 minutes)?

If a version of SinglePlayerCommands ever came out for 1.4.6, you could download that and use /killall.

You could also try going creative mode and turn on the magnet mode on in NEI and fly around picking the stuff up. You're going to have "fun" in Twilight Forest, too. I would suggest keeping the magnet mode on even in survival mode when you're on the surface if you don't want to "cheat" when it's not needed.

If you have NEI installed, and are playing in SSP, there is a option in the NEI menu to disable dropped items. Basically the /killall command, but only for items on the ground.
