So I have a 17x17 sugar cane farm, and I have 9 of these, with a 5x5 square in the middle where my farm block machine will go. My question though is sugar cane good when you get biofuel out of it and put that in the steam boiler to produce MJ? or should I go auto tree farm way?

If you are talking about using a multiblock farm from Forestry, no, it is not worth it. If you use a way that collects the sugar cane without power, say a piston and water vanilla system, then it can be worth it. However, with the saplings being nerfed due to the "sappiness" statistic, this could have changed.

Summery: If you are using a pack for 1.4.7, use a nonpower collection, then put into fermenter, etc.

Definitely don't use the multiblock farm from Forestry for the sugarcane.

What pack are you using?

If you are using Ultimate, then use a Harvester from Minefactory Reloaded. Upgrade the range on it so you can make your farm bigger (I use several silver range upgrades).

If you are using Mindcrack, then use Thaumcraft golems. One smart straw, and a fast wood golem will be enough for a 17x17 farm. You can also switch out the fast wood golem for a strong wood golem.

I was thinking of changing it to Oak wood farm, get the saplings from that and burn it into biofuel. I'll be using industrious fertilizer to grow it fast and I will be getting that from cow poo in a sludge boiler. I'll be using a planter, harvester ect?

If you're using fertilizer just keep the farm 1x1, I've heard that's more effective than a bigger farm if you're using fertilizer. Because it'll spend less time "looking for trees to harvest" and thanks to the fertilizer they grow instantly anyway (the speed of the harvester is the limiting factor, which should be plenty to fuel multiple boilers).
