Along the same theme as above..

Vanilla wither skeleton farm with piston/pressure plates to collect them for infinite coal power.

And unless I'm mistaken about how they work (very possible, I haven't used them) an automous activator can do the killing with a looting sword. Make it a flux infused sword an a system using the very smart itemducts to pull them when out of power and sends them to an infuser and back just because you can.

You mean you don't want to stop the lag caused by lava rendering?

I just don't like seeing cobble there. Gimme replacement material options, even if I need to supply the material. Or a way to disable the replacement material at all, if I so chose it. Using an Ender-thermic pump on an ocean oil well? *shudders*

It's only meant for lava in the nether. It's just so that you don't get massive lag when your client tries to render all the lava. He just added the settings in case people wanted to pump other liquids from the overworld since it's such a useful pump. I don't even know if it can be used on an ocean oil well.

Yeah. I don't mind using it in the Nether much, though I wish it replaced with netherrack so I didn't need to myself. I care about world aesthetics, after all.

But I dropped BuildCraft from my pack as it didn't really add anything I need ... except for the pump.

Vanilla cactus farm + steam dynamo. It doesn't even use TE except for the dynamo, and the AA to supply it with water. In fact you could fuel vanilla furnaces with that...

Related, here is a tree planter using Buildcraft + vanilla. (Harvesting is trivial with a filler, but I borrowed that filler for something else):

It takes a bit of redstone though:
