Installing Optifine

Details of the issue:
I added Optifine and fast craft in an attempt to speed up the game as I have a low end computer. However it doesn't seem the mods are actually loaded. They don't show up in the mods menu at the home screen and there aren't Optifine options in the options menu. To my knowledge I have the correct versions of both mods (minecraft 1.6.4). I installed Optifine in my vanilla game and copied the jar file from there rather than using the original installer download. I'm not certain that step was correct.
Any help is appreciated.
PS I couldn't get the ftb paste website to work And the paste was too big for pastebin. If you need it let me know and I will try to find another way to share it.​
