So today I was forced to go to an art gallery. And, because I'm extremely uncultured, I spent this time thinking about literally anything but the art. So I personally find the combat system in BtNS (RJS's RP), and ABG (My RP), really fun, so I was thinking, could it be a standalone forum game? And the answer is no, it can't, I'm just weird and find simple combat fun. But what if it could? So I spent my time thinking up a combat system that's fun enough to play as a standalone forum game. This is the result. It's currently in testing phase, so if something is OP, tell me, and I don't have time to write a post explaining absolutely everything, so if you want more information about anything, just ask me.

The game will be a battle on a grid, with varying sizes of grid. I may test things such as maps with multiple floors, or maps where you have to escort something, or maps with a ceiling, but right now, they'll all be outside, fight to the death maps, maybe with some walls.

Battles will generally be with characters from a video game or anime or something, it's unlikely that I'll make up completely new characters for you to fight, because that would be boring.

But most importantly, how do you play?
Well first, you'll need to make a character, by getting a name, assigning some stats and making some abilities. Bits in brackets are just additional information, and should not be on the final character sheet.

Name:
Stats: (40 total)
Health: (also known as HP)
Physical defence: (this is your defence against basic attacks)
Special defence: (stat used to defend against special abilities)
Special attack: (stat used for special abilities)
Speed: (movement points, 1 per square, 1 to turn)
Dodge: (chance to dodge)
Reactions: (turn order, can give you multiple turns if high enough)
Precision: (hit chance)

Weapon 1:
Strength:
Point attack?: (this is like an attack from the ground or from the sky, it is harder to block, but it costs one stat point. It is free if you have AoE, but it changes AoE behaviour.)
AoE?: (makes you hit all within range. Costs 2 stat points. If AoE and point, hits in an expanding area based on range.)
Weapon type: (snipe - long and 1 square wide, rail - medium and 3 squares wide, fan - fairly short and expanding outwards, pistol - short and wide, melee - very short and all stats for this weapon do not exist, apart from strength, which is +3)
Range:

Weapon 2:

Strength:
Point attack?:
AoE?:
Weapon type:
Range:

Abilities: (3 total)

(abilities have special effects, and can range from putting down a mine, to creating a barrier, to healing allies, to attacking with an AoE point magic attack. Abilities will usually have a weapon type and a range, unless that doesn't make sense for the ability. They will also usually have cooldowns, which vary based on the ability. If an ability is point or AoE, this will not cost stat points, but it may increase the cooldown. I may also buff or nerf abilities.)

If you want to make a character, use this sheet with the annotations removed:
Name:
Stats:
Health:
Physical defence:
Special defence:
Special attack:
Speed:
Dodge:
Reactions:
Precision:

Weapon 1:
Strength:
Point attack?:
AoE?:
Weapon type:
Range:

Weapon 2:

Strength:
Point attack?:
AoE?:
Weapon type:
Range:

Abilities: (3 total)

For the weapon types, this is their shape:

Snipe: 1 wide, but 3x your range long.
Rail: 3 wide, and 2x your range long.
Fan: starts off 1 wide, and adds a new row each time you add a range. This new row will be 1 wider in both directions than the last.
Pistol: It's complicated, but it'll generally get wider each time you add range, and occasionally, it'll also get longer.

And that's it! Feel free to ask questions! Once people start making characters, I'll see what kind of anime or video game you guys want to fight characters from.

Cheese, I think you'er making this way too complex for a basic game. Perhaps remove electronic / magic stats?
Gonna second J here, if need be pick a setting so you're working with either magik OR electronic, but not both.

Regarding point attacks, what do you mean by 'harder to block'? Do you mean in terms of a LoS system, or that the target will have a reduced dodge/defense? If the latter, how much by?

I'm also finding it difficult to follow exactly what comes as free, what costs stat points etc. I follow the sort of CS template, but I don't think it's too great of a fit as is, and could use some tweaking.

LoS. Point attacks generally ignore cover.

Point attacks cost 1 point, except when you have AoE, or if it's an ability.

AoE costs 2 points, except when it's an ability.

Hopefully this will help anyone that's confused. This is an example character:

Name: Bob
Stats:
Health: 3
Physical defence: 3
Special defence: 2
Special attack: 2
Speed: 3
Dodge: 3
Reactions: 4
Precision: 5

Weapon 1:
Strength: 5
Point attack?: N
AoE?: N
Weapon type: snipe
Range: 5

Weapon 2:

Strength: 3
Point attack?: N
AoE?: N
Weapon type: pistol
Range: 2

Abilities:

Dispersion grenade:
Special attack
Weapon type: rail
AoE?: Y
Point: Y
Range: 3
Knocks back all enemies to outside the blast radius. Cannot be thrown directly onto enemies.
3 turn cooldown.

Sprint:
Doubles speed for his turn, but he cannot shoot. No cooldown. Used before movement.

Trap:
Place down a trap in front of Bob. If an enemy steps on it, they are unable to move, except turning, for two turns. Two turn cooldown.

Ah, I forgot to reduce the total stats. They were a bit generous even when there were two more stats, so the total is now 40. Bob and the OP will be edited.

Ok, so why would I choose a snipe weapon when I could take a fan of the same range?
