Hey,

In the above mentioned pack, if I use a flint made axe and I chop a tree it chops the entire tree down rather than the single block. This only happens with the flint axe, is it possible to turn that off?

I couldn't work out what mod was causing it and if that mod was doing anything else as well as that.

As far as I remember, the tree-felling is part of gregtech itself.

It might be possible to turn this off. There's an entry ...

B:timber_axe=true

... at the bottom of the 'general' section in the config file [your save folder]/config/GregTech/GregTech.cfg.

Try changing that to false and restart. Might work.

Apart from that, you can use stone axes but they're nerfed durability-wise (about 50 uses from memory).

fwiw, it happens with ALL gregtech axes (and chainsaws).

Its particularly handy with trees that grow without branches, such as spruce or fir. In fact, you'll have a much harder time getting your steam industry going without leveraging this mechanic.

True. Early on I usually have a forestry crafting table with the flint axe recipe stored, next to a set of 2x2 spruce trees. Can bag quite a few logs pretty quickly for the charcoal pit.

I feel dumb, but it never occurred to me to set up axe crafting directly adjacent to the trees.

And the joy of a Minecraft community one again emerges.

This is why I love this group. Learn all kind of new "stupid pet tricks" just trolling through the posts.

If I squint my eyes, I can see that as a compliment :)

eh? Why the squint? It is a full on complement. It's one of the things that keep me coming back to Minecraft again and again. Even in a severely locked down hardcore pack there are still ways and ways to do things. A fresh perspective, or just a different mindset can come up with other and "better" ways of doing a thing, like setting up a crafting device to make disposable axes right next to your manual tree farm. Something I myself have done in some packs, and have forgotten to do in others necessitating running all over hells half-acre and back clearing a 16/16 oak block with crummy tools.

No, please, I did get your point but was just joking about the 'stupid pet tricks' bit.

Showing my age with that. Dave Lettermen reference, incase you didn't get it. It's what I've always called that sort of simple thing that seems exceeding obvious after hearing/seeing but you never put that particular arrangement together.

Ah, got it - haven't really seen much of Lettermen (being a Brit). He's got a new series on Netflix - worth watching, do you think?

I know what you mean about the tricks though. I had the same revelation about turning cracked sand into sand in Regrowth - I saw a youtuber do it and proper facepalmed that I hadn't thought of it; it basically involved using a specific placement for crafting frames, a bucket, and water; and it allowed much more rapid manual production of sand. Like you said, its great when you're going through threads and see really nifty ideas.

yes, there's nothing like seeing something like that in one of these forum posts that make you look at that huge/complicated machine you put together over one IRL day or more and realize, "self! you are an idiot" and go tear it down for something immanently simpler, cheaper and or faster or leave it running in defiance of your own derp-ness.
