but if you're going for something that needs chrome, there is no better way than having an ind. grinder and a rockcutter. silktouch the redstone ore, grind it to redstone (gives 10 redstone dust + 1/2 glowstone dust) and then centrifuge the redstone. that will give you so much mercury, that you can hardly use it up.

and suddenly, those tiny piles are often (depending on the recipe) normal piles... and I'd say, if a ferrous ore give one piece platinum dust, that doesn't sound so bad....

There's actually a better way to get both ruby and platinum, and its the same way for both.

Nevertheless, Grinder 4 lyfe, and people who burn lava for energy should be beaten with tire irons.

hell yeah store up a tank of liquid mercury and make an AE thing or something that sends a cell to get filled with mercury for each ore it can process, other than than that they're real easy to setup with water for basic ores as well, if you have the tech to do it easily do it but don't fret early on

Once you get enough resources and energy, grinders are worth it. I currently have 10 macerators, but only 3 of them are being used (to make sand, quartz dust, etc.) All my ores go to my 3 grinders, and I even use mercury cells for the ferrous to get the extra platinum (I have enough mercury for other resources too, just havent decided what to put it towards.)If you're on a server, the fact that they're slower doesn't really matter. I go to bed for the night, leaving my quarry running, and wake up with more than enough resources to do whatever I want.

On that note, slightly off-topic, I dont get people who run 4 or 5 quarries. My 1 max size, set at max speed, has gotten me enough resources in 5 re-placements to get me every IC2 and gregtech machine (Short of the industrial sawmill, and freezer, since I dont really need them.)

On SSP though, Ill stick with my max overclocked macerators. They get the job done at the right speed.

I wonder how many blocks a quarry or a miner can dig, from the energy saved from not using industrial grinder but usingba macerator. I am trying to do some math behind it, but it seems I need to consider ore distribution as well.

Then you also want to consider the by-product from ferrous ore (platinum-> iridium) vs. the amount of energy you need to get iridium from uum vs. the amount of energy you save from not using industrial grinder.

I think I will only consider products directly form the grinder. Or the math will be very complex. Also as I know the speed of quarry does not vary directly to the power usage.

Yes, when an economics formula has the potential of coming up with a result you don't like, you "tweak" it by ignoring major parts of the issue.

Paul Krugman school of economics, I see.
