What do I need to put into the additional parameters of the launcher to give me four GBs of memory

Of course, to use Java x64, you'll need to:
1) have a 64 bit OS (standard nowadays, but only recently), and
2) if you have a 32-bit browser, like Firefox, you'll have to pick a different installation than the default.
After that, I think there's a slider somewhere that you'll be able to set as high as you want.
