I recently updated to the mindcrack pack v8 (the unstable-ish one) and got started on tier 3 of thaumcraft. After discovering a couple of cool looking new things I noticed that an obsidian pillar has been added to the world-gen. I have been pretty liberal about exploring my world as I was under the impression that world-gen had been completed. Mind you I don't really mind new things being added as far as items and machines but world-gen things can get kind of difficult to come across after making ones world so huge. Really my question is will this be happening a lot and just I wanted to get other opinion on the matter.

This will be happening when ever the mod makers deem it necessary to create new world gen. Which probably won't be very often. If you were looking at that google docs page, all that means is that every mod with a possibility of being in FTB that includes world gen has been updated to 1.4.6, not that world gen is actually DONE.

Maybe I misunderstood the whole thing but then what was the point of the "waiting for redpower" thing? I apologize if I come across kinda bitchy but I really thought the mod world-gen was completed. As for vanilla I kinda knew that it's probably never gonna really be done.

Like OmegaPython said- All mods that have world gen are in the pack. Nobody ever said they will never add/change/remove what they generate, but they are all there and on the same MC version.

There was no promise of completed world-gen in all the mods. That would be implying that the mod authors knows for a fact he/she is never going to add anything else to the world at all, what they were waiting for was for mods that did have world gen to update, mods with ores and major structures. FTB is a mod pack that just puts together some commonly used mods in a way that is easy for people to use, they don't control the content that mod developers put into it so if they want to add more world-gen they can. Thaumcraft is very much a work-in-progress, and we are lucky that azanor has given us a way to regenerate the world through the config file. His minecraft forum post has the details if you want to figure out how: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1585216-thaumcraft-302b-updated-2412013/

I guess it was a bit naive of me to think that the world gen would be completed, so I just did an old fashion delete chunks in mcedit sense a lot of my nodes vanished in the process anyway. Those pillar things aren't nearly as rare as I thought they'd be.

Thaumcraft has an option of back dating the various terrain gen features.

Yes you can just turn on the world gen for Thaumcraft. Thaum is nice that you can toggle a regen for a few world gen items. But be mindful only do one at a time because as the OP have stated he explored a lot so expect a ton of lag for a bit until it is done with the regen.
