Me and my brother are trying to setup a LAN server for FTB. I can create it manually (through the normal way) or automatically (with the automatic "open to LAN" in the minecraft client). Either way, I still come up with the same outcome; when my brother connects to it, it says he has joined, it waits for a little bit, then he disconnects and his game crashes. I really need help on this one. My firewall settings are fine, and most of the normal help will not do anything for me in this situation. Please help!

Looks like it is something to do with the world. Maybe a corrupted chunk that he is loading. Or could be something to do with your router as even though you're firewall is set up properly, this could still be an affecting factor. Sorry that I can't be a help here, hopefully someone will notice the thread and be able to help you.

Actually, the router is a very possible solution. I am able to set up a normal Minecraft LAN server, but not a dedicated one, same goes for all games. My router is a WNR2000v3 I think. It sucks by the way.

It could be the router but like TheDJParadox said the world may have a bug in the chunk. So you may have to find a fix on a wiki or on minecraftforums.

I'll try, but his computer is a rental for his school. It might have game servers blocked. Thanks for the help, by the way!

Edit: He tried, and It does the same as when he joins a LAN server.

I would suggest using java 7 64 bit. I had crashes like this when i was installing ultimate on my brothers little laptop, switched it to java 7 64bit solved the problem. If that doesn't work download and use the dedicated server.

Looks like it is something to do with your firewall settings, This is common with Netgear manufactured routers (from what I have heard.) Try turning your firewall completely off and see if this still happens but DO NOT keep it completely off. If this is the problem, try unlocking the firewall for just the 2 computers that are trying to connect to each other. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I can pull from memory, that may be a possible fix.

I must disagree this is clearly a client crash, "brother connects to it, it says he has joined, it waits for a little bit, then he disconnects and his game crashes". So his client sees the server and can connect ergo not a router problem. If it was the router, the server would not register the new player at all, and the client machine would always get "can't reach server" in the multiplayer list.

Humm, You do have a good point there. I'm not good with java myself so I'm not the best at working out mod errors. I only make bukkit plugins myself.
