If you're using the Direwolf20 1.6.4 pack (since you didn't specify which FTB pack you're using), then you can watch Direwolf20's current single-player Let's Play series, he thoroughly explains everything he does with all the blocks he's using in a way that someone who's never played modded Minecraft will be able to understand it.
Starting off with IndustralCraft2 is good imo. It's not the mod you can do the most efficient things with, but it's a good introduction to modded MC. It's what I started with.
I would advise trying out Thermal Expansion. It gives you a lot of the same functionality as IC2, but is more user friendly and less punishing (IMO). Also, watching videos or reading the wiki is a good way to learn about all the different mods and how to start with them.
Tinkers Construct first for tools. Thermal expansion next for ore doubling. Minefactory Reloaded harvester + planter for fuel generation. Or to simplify it further, skip tinkers construct step.
That should be a simple way to start. It's modded MC so there's lots of ways to do everything.
