Here are a few things you can try. Make sure you are using the 64bit version, of Java, if your new computer has a 64bit OS. Be sure to remove all other versions and the 32bit versions as well. You could try adding some arguments to the launcher as well.

Edit: Some times max allocation of RAM is not wise. Leave some for other programs and your OS.

it says in the argument link that i need to set the launcher max ram slider to 2gb but, the slider only goes up to 1gb, is there a new update to the launcher?

Please get the 64bit version of Java by following the guide. You can only select 1GB because you have the 32bit version.

Don't give the launcher too much ram becuase it won't use it well. Give it 4gb.
Give it 2GB and use the JVM arguments in the post stickied in this very forum. You are just making it worse by giving it more RAM.

Giving it 4gb is the maximum you want to allocate. Also having a few chunk loaders and creating mystcraft worls is what causes more ram usage.

Sure, but with a rather extensive save, quite a few chunks loaded over several dimensions my game is still only using 900MB-1.4GB. 2GB is plenty. It is also what the JVM arguments are optimized for I believe.
