Derp, should have noted that when I use a large amount of DSUs, I just put item frames with the items on them. No number, but at least I can have a clear visual of what is being held.
How to see whats inside of my DSU from Outside.

Aye, I did the same before I started using Jabba. Having to open the DSU GUI to deposit or extract also bugs me. Sometimes, I just want a stack of something look food, torches, stone/glass to build with, etc.,.
I usually just extract everything to the DSUs first, then put a storage bus on it and never mess with it again, only using the AE system to extract. I'll probably be using Jabba now though, since that ridiculous upgrade system is gone. The only reason I didn't use it was because I thought it was silly to have to make a bazillion tier 1s/2s/etc.. to get to one tier high barrel. I'd rather have more difficulty in aquiring the materials than monotonous crafting of lower tiers to get to the max storage capacity.
The upgrade clickiness is much better in 1.1.1 . Apply a few Structure Upgrades, a few feature upgrades, and then a few storage upgrades if you apply them in '9' size. It's about 1/3 as many clicks as 1.1.0 . Still, I wish Jabba had recipes for the higher-tiered barrels from the get-go.
For example, it might would be nice if Jabba had shapeless recipes to apply upgrades so you could AE-automate a barrel with a specific configuration.
