Title:
How to Open your own server?
Details of the issue:
What I'm trying to figure out is how I can go about buying a server for my family/friends to play on, so where can I buy one or get one?

Also might need one for a separate server for my viewer's. Please feel free to show me to website's or what not!

I've rented from a few different spots. If you are looking to rent high end quality then creeper host is really the way to go. If you want quality at a budget then beast node is the best at that.

If you want to own you might look up builds on partpicker or such. I would recommend 8 gigs of RAM(4GB for minecraft, the rest for anything else that is running. Like java and the OS) and a beast of a CPU. just use the intergrated graphics that come with the board. Linux would be the best option for OS. If minecraft is all you want to run on them. A few other game servers will work on them to without any sort of emulation or such.

Do they not host the server for you? And if I wanted to change it from say Pixelmon to...Crazy Craft, could I?

Creeper host and Beastnode both host their own server. I was referring to if you wanted to set up and use your own hardware.

Creeper host so far is the only one I have found that allows for easily changing between games servers. You can easily install multiple servers. They recommend only running one at a time though. I found skeleton or the next one to be the best tiers. They cost a bunch though if you don't get them during a sale.

You best option really is setting up and running your own though. After one year it will have been paid for, going by the rate the similar tier rentals are. And if you have the players paying a small access fee it will be paid off and much easier to maintain. Though bandwidth available and any data caps come into play then.

Sorry, misread your post. I have yet to rent a server that didn't let me change the modpack when I wanted. Creeperhost had the best selection of available modpacks. Beastnode had a short list. Both allowed for uploading packs that weren't listed, or custom packs.

I was thinking Terraria, Starmade, or Counter Strike. Most server providers charge per game per server. Creeper host is the only one I know of that doesn't care which game servers are on the server you rented. Beastnode was going to set something along those lines up. Not for sure if they got it completed. It was going to be Linux only though. So a lot of the servers might be a little tougher to get running. As some games don't provide servers that run on anything other then windows.
