First off, you'll want a lot of dirt. If you want to be successful, I'd say a stack.

Then, just wait until you get a rooster.

Give them a few seeds.

Once more chickens spawn, you will want to pick up literally all of their crap.

Then, get dirt and surround it with manure, and you get Fertilized Dirt.

Place it, and put a water source near it.

Craft a water can, and spray the wheat you will plant.

Craft a bunch of nests, and put chickens in.

Profit off manure.

Also you can take the same chicken droppings and put it into the wooden barrels to compost it into dirt.

Ya can't get chickens without the dirt.

True... but once you do have them. It is one of the best ways to get more dirt and as you said fertilized dirt.

It's actually what I do now! Once you get roosters, it's incredibly easy. Zombie flesh serves as a good substitute before you get the chicken crap, though.
