I've been playing in a horizons world and wanted to create some automatic farms. Adding MFR is out of the question and I've been unable to find any other way in my brief skims of the items with NEI. I've also been trying to find a good source of power, so I guess I have two questions:

-How to automate farms in Horizons
-A reliable source of power in horizons, without steam dynamos.

Automated farms? Use fans from Rotary craft or Thaumcraft golems. As for reliable source of power, use reactors from reactorcraft.

Thaumcraft golems sound like a good idea, but what about earlier game power?
Compression dynamos with liquifacted coal. Just needs a magma crucible, pulverizer, and an aqueous accumulator. One bucket of liquifacted coal equals 1 million RF.

pistons holding up water source blocks:
if you can afford the iron buckets, you could go with dispensers with water buckets as well.

the trick now, is how to time it. unfortunately, without mfr, its hard to know when a plant is ready to harvest, so i generaly do it with a button or switch and activate it by hand. if you want it automatic, rig up a redstone timer, or a hopper timer (2 hoppers facing each other with a stack of items flowing back and forth between them, search that on youtube) to time the release of the water

use hoppers to collect the drops, or if your fancy, try AE transition planes. you should have hopper ducts, easy to route the drops to you ae network or other storage of your choice

if you want your crops replanted...golems. or turtles, if computercraft is available

power...i remember ganys mods had a block that could convert any item into lava. if you do a lot of underground mining, great way to get rid of all that extra dirt, gravel and cobble by dumping it into this furnace and getting lava in return. use magmatics to convert to rf. i do warn you, the volcanic furnace, i think it was called, was pretty expensive in terms of diamonds.
