So, I want to setup a small server for me to play FTB with some of my friends (3-4 friends). My budget is pretty low (around 10 dollars a month). How much RAM would you suggest? I keep hearing 1-2 GB. Would 1 GB be enough for what I'm looking at? Is there anything I should do to increase performance on a lower end server? Also, feel free to suggest hosts for servers that meet my criteria.

I was honestly having trouble with 1 gig for 3 ppl once the machines started to fly. That said I never actually need a full 2 gb of memory either.

Probably BUT what I'd recommend is a host that lets you upgrade easily if required and then start with 1GB. If you have problems.. see if anyone wants to pitch in the $5 it should cost to go to 1.5 GB or $10 to get to 2 GB.

Thanks, that sounds like a good plan. Do you know of any hosts that would offer this?

At this point.. while I myself was very interested in FragnNet I'm going to call it overkill. My current host (CraftingHost) has been pretty good (lil support lag once) and they are a much cheaper option.

Well not my 11 Activity paying referrals and they own their hardware. I'm getting sick of overselling shit so you really gotta pay for good services now a day. They did step down their pricing on their dedicated servers and give you more STARTA drive space (Dedicated 1 went from 118 bucks for same specs only you had 250GB HHD now the same specs Plus an additional 250GB for 99 bucks) However yea their pricing is expensive. Well maybe that 1GB/s line is nice since for economy dedicated servers only gives you a standard 100MB/s line.

For about 3-4 friends less then 1GB of ram will last a month or so but once the world starts growing and machines are built more ram will be needed and this will always continue to grow the longer the server is up. About 2GB will be needed if it has been up for a few months. And I would look at other hosts then fragnet as they do offer extreem rip offs on some of their products and you can get better deals in other places. ex- minecraft server with 12GB of ram for $200+ a month?? da hell fragnet. I have a 64GB ram dedicated server with a 3.6ghz 8 core intel xeon 1650 E5 and 2x1TB drives and a 500mib/s line up/down for $150. These kinds of things should be considered.

Are they managed and customer support response in under an hour to Every ticket? Yea you should just go with a 8GB or less cause idk why 12x1GB servers are cheaper than a single 12GB variant.

My host does not offer software support however great support hardware wise and free repairs if anything fails and generally a response in under 30 minutes(I don't use fragnet) and I need a lot more then 8GB of ram. Just to run my server it uses over 28GB just to startup minecraft. (I probably have some of the largest worlds ever made xD)

Alright but those servers are just that, you just get the hardware and the rest is on your shoulders. Don't get me wrong but if someone wanna just hop right into MC well.. dedicated unmanaged servers is the last thing they want. However if you know what's your doing then using one Can in deed save you money.

True however it comes with full DDoS protection free and any OS I would ever need (except mac since it uses EFI not BIOS) also it is fairly easy to manage, 90% of it is exactly the same as a normal minecraft server, you could use a web panel line multicraft or mcmyadmin or just screen (plugin) by itself and bam it is a really powerful minecraft server that used just for minecraft. Lastly for this amount of power (which I really need) and lots of ram (about 50GB used at a time on average) it is the best deal you can get.

Well you have to install it and I tried with one of a OVH server and could not get it to work despite 3 hours of trying to install it and trouble shooting. I did tried Mulitcraft as well and still no anvil as well. Another very good host for cost and Great customer service (usually Less than 15mins per response!) http://client.doanvps.net/aff.php?aff=012 Yep they do resell but at least they're cheaper and better customer support than Fragnet. They even offered me a move to some SSD for nothing cause I have lag and my players disliked the lag! When I requested cancellation. However players already donated so I had to reject the offer. Regardless in my opinion they do actually care about customers. I may buy a dedicated machine from them if they continue this good practice of giving great support and really caring about consumers.

Seems like these guys are arguing over nothing. If your wanting something easy you can just google for a good host for just 3-5 players. I use https://www.minecraftserverdeals.com/ and they have been great. Its all in what you have been using and how you have been treated that gives you the experience. Every minecraft hosting company is the same (However there is many bogus ones) They offer services to maintaining and answer support tickets but they do not own the dedicated servers. They rent those from datacenters. Anything should do for your server, definitely keep the RAM above 1.5GB to play on the safe side of things.

These guys are talking none-sense, has nothing to do with your question and running a small 1-10 player server. Simple , easy and quick.

We have already provided a answer to the question and while waiting for a response we are discussing server hosts that we use.

I don't know wow that could be different all dedicated servers/VPS have the same way of installing minecraft as they are both controlled with ssh on root.
