Depending on the modpack it can take more or less time. But generally speaking:
I build my first hut in a hill or slap something together rather quickly.
Deforest and level the area and start making torches and fences.
Light up the area and place my fences.
My building plot has been assigned. Start a little farm and gathering some live stock.
Now it's time to procrastinate
or mining senselessly in my strip mine for the materials to be used for future plans.
