Greetings to whomever cares to read this dribble,
First off, I would like to say thank you to the feed the beast mod teams, you gals and guys are freakin' awesome! Each of you have incredible commitment to these projects because I am learning first hand experience a small fraction of what you all must go through consistently and I salute each of you for it.
Now my story: I was aware of Minecraft's existence since around the release of infdev my cousin told me about it. At the time, I was "living life" and saw the incredible potential of Vanilla Minecraft and knew it was too big for me at the time to get into. However, I was smart enough to foresee wanting to play Minecraft, so I registered my e-mail with Mojang and my username even though I didn't own a copy. (Betcha can't guess what my MC username is, huh?)
Last year is when I re-discovered Minecraft and since I had finally settled down, I could allow myself to play. A friend of mine on a Playstation 3 unlocking website convinced me to help him try out his "new modded server" for Minecraft. I was absolutely amazed even then since he was running only about 5 mods at the time. I had to have a server and a way to get me and my (few IRL) friends to play Minecraft with some mods. It didn't take me long to find the Feed the Beast website and I was in heaven, except one problem. At the time, we didn't care to keep our computers up-to-date with the latest and greatest hardware, so we found it taxing at first to get FTB Unleashed to work for us. (Especially since we had to have ALL of the mods enabled for Unleashed as well as future mod packs)
After viewing enough Youtube videos about FTB Unleashed, I did some more researching and found alternative ways to get Minecraft working better for us. Our first Unleashed server was a pentium 4 something with only 1GB RAM and it was DDR1 RAM (which if you are a computer person you KNOW Minecraft modded is uber slow with DDR1). Over time, I found a way to upgrade our client systems and managed to slowly build a better server.
Then my biggest dream soon to turn into hellish nightmare came true, Minecraft FTB mod packs for 1.6.4 and the current mod pack we host on our best server, Monster! At that point, I was able to acquire a better server, but we always continued to struggle with finding ways to get Monster running on our sluggish computers while at the same time finding ways to either replace or upgrade our sluggish clients. Somehow we always managed to get it to run (barely) enough for us to play and have fun even though the mod packs would update and I even decided to throw in some extra mods. (of course I pick ones that were not in the config files already like: Galacticraft, Ars Magica 2, Tropicraft, and Morph which we still have in monster to this day even updated to 1.1.2 which is current as of this date the recommended build of Monster)
It's always been hell going through most all of the config files and mods and each nit picking and seeing which ones conflicted and which ones didn't. But in the end, it's helped me learn a lot about Minecraft and how to work with mods as far as 1.5.2 Minecraft and higher. (Thank goodness I waited at least for them, I heard you had to actually modify the minecraft JAR file itself for mod installations before)
Basically, this story is just a recount as to why I appreciate the mod team at feed the beast, the mod authors as well, and everyone dedicated to the spread of fun and mods. Even to this day, we have a new 1.7.10 mod server that we are dabbling with and I wouldn't have had the gumption to even try if it wasn't for the feed the beast mod pack and the ability to add on top of it. I don't even play any other games because there is so much to flippin do in Monster and since I do not have experience with Minecraft modded, it's gonna take a while for me to even finish up with Monster even though there are some of those that have moved on and/or are awaiting the new 1.7 mod packs to come out. I think I'm gonna stick with Monster and move it to the test server and move the test server to the now main server that we have. (Both are locally hosted on our fiber network connection, both of the servers are now higher-end and do quite well even with a number of people on all at once.)
So, in summary thanks once more to every dedicated person on the teams and each mod author. I wish I could personally thank everyone but.... yeah you and I both know why that can't happen.
I'm planning on sticking with Monster for a while and building up some stuff and going through as much as I can before I switch to 1.7 or higher even though we already have a 1.7.10 modded server with our own pack now I still am very happy with the Monster mod pack! By and far, people can disagree with me but until there is something like it, I think Monster is the best mod pack ever conceived and appreciate everyone's hard work.
