Your preferred method of steel production?

  • I play an ancient pack that still has Calclavia's 1x Iron/4x Coal crafting recipe

This thought just occurred to me. I've added Rotarycraft and Mekanism to FtB infinity and it seems beyond these custom additions there aren't really many options for mass-producing steel any more.

Which would you say you use most?

My personal favourite Steel Production is from Witching Gadgets, the Infernal Blast Furnace. Also doubles as an ore-tripler. It is free, but fairly slow unless you use Ignis vis (it doesn't accept ignis essentia)

I'm very partial to the HSLA steel method, as much because that also gets me RoC's awesome looking HSLA steel armor which is amazing early game.

That said, at the moment I'm still in Monster so I have Calclavia's for steel if I need one or two quickly. TE's steel recipe is one I always forget about.

Pig Iron is awesome, though I forget unless I'm on a rare trip into the nether.

I use lots of IC2 Blast Furnaces as they're dirt cheap to run and easy to craft relative to other options (looking at you Railcraft).

Tinker's Steelworks all the way. Instant, multiple-block quantities of steel if you set it up right. It's also one of the more realistic methods of making steel.
If you automated it, it would be even better, but seeing as you can get so much by hand I rarely do (although maybe I should minetweaker something to make it worth it).

I've found having IC2 in the pack when one does the induction smelter thing quite annoying.

You get refined iron, which you can pulverize into AOBD steel dust, but which smelts back into refined iron. I had to chuck the dust into my smeltery to actually get steel out of it :p

I may be the only person in the world who uses coke ovens mainly for creosote oil instead of coal coke. I just usually make a couple blast furnaces for no other reason than to use up the coal coke I made.

I make steel by putting pulverized coal and iron into an induction smelter... Easiest way IMO.

While not an FTB pack, I use both Tinker's Steelworks and Mekanism in my pack. Mekanism to get started, and Steelworks for rapid mass production. Six blocks of steel per iteration FTW!

If refined iron is oredicted as steel doesn't it work in recipes that want steel then just fine? I assume it just irks you that it is refined iron but it should work for most things as long as the recipe uses ore dictionary for steel. It's still bloody stupid on IC2's part, though.

Railcraft fan that I am, I tend to use an absolutely absurd amount of Creosote Oil. I do admittedly miss it being OreDict with Seed Oil for Forestry, but I make so many rail ties that it's a non-issue.

I prefer railcraft over the rest, but I just updated to 1.9 and I am having a lot of fun with immersive engineering so I may keep with that.

In Infinity, I got the first few ingots from chests (TC Greatwoods and such). After my mob farm was set up, I melted down any and all armor drops (I had to automate repairing them first, which was a different challenge) in a TiCo Smeltery. This provided me with a decent sum of steel as well as a boatload of gold.

That combined with an EnderQuarry in the Nether provided me with all the steel I needed. If I needed more, I would probably use the TE Induction Smelter as noted above, as it is the easiest method, and I have an abundance of coal powder from SAG Milling my coal ore.

It varies. The only constant is that I avoid Railcraft for steel production because it requires Nether resources and it's very slow.

BTW, does any of the 1.7.10 packs actually have Tinker's Steelworks? I found its ore-processing rather cool in Agrarian Skies.
