How do I learn?

Both, actually. I think I remember seeing it hop gaps before, but I know it can travel both down and up, so it will eventually cross the hole.
Looks like backpacks and boats are my only option Q.Q I'll mine the entire volcano before I go for basalt :3
I must admit that figuring out bee breeding myself was one of the most satisfying experiences in minecraft I have ever had. But it did take some experimentation and remembrance of basic biology. But it was a great experience.
I tried to take that approach, but made a complete hash of it. GenerikB's vids start you from scratch by assuming you never touched a bee before, explain the mechanics and how things work, then leaves you to figure out the rest by yourself - but gives you a good foundation at least 
When I first started with FTB, I watched a few of DW20's videos. and then started a SSP world in creative mode to figure out how stuff worked together (and didnt work). This let me concentrate on how to set things up rather than where do I get the next set of resources to build this block i want to try out.
Hmm had too look that up. Never heard that name before
But yeah once you realise that its actually based on Mendelian inheritance(just without all the complex bits) it all falls into place

As you might have noticed, Bees are a lot to get into in a dozen posts, much less one. They can be fun, but start them early, so you've got other things to do while you wait for them.
My suggestion for the first mod to learn is NEI. It sounds strange but you'll come to use NEI for many things. Know the name of a block, but can't recall how to build it? NEI. Can't remember what to put together to make an alloy? NEI. If you use the drop downs from the item subsets menu, and SHIFT+RIGHT-CLICK a mod name, you'll lock NEI to just that mod. Right-click the search bar to clear it. Double Left-Click it to make it gold, and then type something. It'll highlight only that. Useful for finding things in your no doubt overflowing chests. Double Left-Click again to turn it off.
Ars Magicka is a great mod to start with. Try out Dire's Forgecraft 2, Season4, Episode 4. He walks one of the other players through spell creation, which is a great guide to doing it yourself. You cannot go wrong with a touch dig spell. It's got a slightly shorter reach than a pick, but it'll go for quite a long time.
