How do I grow a great oak tree?

So I'm playing ftb Monster and want to make my home in a great oak tree (from the highlands mod). I found a good spot, made a bunch of saplings and placed them down in a 5x5 pattern w the corners missing, and then I used a hoe of growth I found, but nothing. Do I just have to let it grow on it's own, or am I not putting down enough saplings?
