Hello,

First time enchanting a pick with fortune, and wanting to actually mine with it, so I go at diamond level, make my turtles dig branch mines for me (100 long, torches every 10, letting 3 blocks between each), and I start mining all the ores with a normal pick and the gems/dusts with my fortune 3.

I encounter a few gems on the road that are not the RP ones, but having 3 miner backpacks, I don't really pay attention to what they drop.

Later, while sorting my loots into the various chests and barrels, I notice that I only have RP gems.
I assume that the non-RP ones dropped RP ones, not certain how though, but at least the red ones did.

That said, I checked the recipes that use the non-rp ones, and I don't see them using the RP ones, so I will be a little stuck on that later.

After further checking of my 64x64 area that my turtles dug, I notice that I don't have any non-RP gems there either.

The question is: Am I screwed?

You can use RP gems in place of the GregTech ones for all crafting. You looked up the recipes wrong.

No, actually.

The short version is that the Forge Ore Dictionary will save you - you can feed RP rubies into Industrial Grinders for Chrome, for instance, and RP rubies are far more common. So if anything, you're out ahead.
If you're a purist, you could try Silk Touching the blocks and feeding them into the I. Grinder, though - that should get you GT rubies.

gregtech uses unificator so when redpower is installed ores drop RP gems, thats because you can use RP gems in all gregtech recipes, but RP doesnt use ore dictionary properly so GT gems cant be used in RP recipes

Ok, my mistake, I just saw that I was looking at the recipes from the wrong way, so it didn't give me all the possibilities.

You can apparently use RP gems in place of other gems in crafting recipes.

Now, I just need to understand why I don't have a single emerald to trade with the villagers^^

I can confirm that running either ruby, either sapphire, into an industrial grinder that you always get RP gems. Which is what NEI shows you will get.

On the other hand, before I had silk touch I always got GT gems when I mined a GT ruby ore. I distinctly remember trying to use one to make a pickaxe, since I had exactly three GT rubies and could eliminate the stack. (Making the pickaxe failed, of course)

Well, I am playing Mindcrack v7, and previously v6, I know it was different with the alpha pack, and maybe with the early versions of the Mindcrack pack.

And no thank for the silk touch, as macerating and all that stuff will net less than a fortune III (that can get up to 4 at once), that's the main reason for me still using picks when I have access to all I nees to make the IC2 tools.

If you want ruby dust, i. grinding gem ore is better than the fortune 3 pickaxe (2.5 dusts/ore) , fortune 3 only give 2.2 gem/gem ore.
