What's your connection speed and how close are you physically to your friend? Ping and Upload rates are very important, no amount of hardware server or client side can change that.

If you have a good Internet connection and a static ip its probably not too hard to host one. But as soon as you have to start using things like tunngle or hamachi you will without any doubt get some sort of lagg.

When my server is online and me and my friend are playing, Java uses about 450mb ram and the server itself uses around 150mb ram. Im not sure about the CPU requierements though.

Try to change your graphics settings in minecraft. for example the render distance and the details and all

For maximum FPS use:
- Graphics: Fast
- Render Distance: Short/Tiny
- Smooth Lighting: OFF
- Performance: Max FPS
- AdvancedOpenGL: Fast
- Clouds: OFF
- Fog: OFF
- Animations: All OFF
- Sky: OFF
- Stars: OFF

This is from the official Optifine thread. Try those settings and check if it still lags. If it doesnt lag then, its probably your machine that cant handle minecraft. If it still does, i run out of ideas <.<

i just noticed that the recent update remooved optifine....
added it and now it's worst :(
it's not massive lag so i'll just live with it i guess
im guessing it's either/both my cpu and ram that aren't good enough

i also did try the settings posted on the upper post but that didnt change anything
