Windows .exe Horrible lag with mobs and players only (server)

So my husband and his friends got on the FTB server for the first time last night. Everything worked great except the fact that all mobs and players lagged horribly when moving. This makes things really hard when fighting monsters. It's not a connection issue. Any help would be appreciated!

any logs whould be helpful, that way we might be able to help. There are so many variables to take in account that we can't even start guessing what the cause is.
Are all players lagging? Is it a rented server or own hosted?

Were mobs walking slower then normal?
Like taking a few steps then pausing, then taking another few steps?
Or did they move at normal speeds but keept warping around?

if it appears to be fps lag you may need to turn the sound off, minecraft is well known for it's lag filled sound system

I have a fairly good computer but I can't play with the sound on without the game freazing up due to having the sound on

if it's the server itself running slow then it could be a variety of issues once of which could be not having a good enough computer or connection to run the server properly

Thanks for the replies. I think I fixed it with something simple- I needed to update to Java 64.
