So in terms of some good power generation. I have just started using nether stars for power using the nether star generator from Simple Generators. This is actually working out very nicely for me since I can get an abundance of nether stars using the Tome Alkehestry. If you want to power your base using nether stars first get the tome of alkehestry, it isn't to difficult to get, I got it fairly easy. Then go to the nether and the the skulls needed to fight the wither, kill the wither, get the star and bam, nether stars forever. You are also going to need a to of redstone though, I suggest setting up a farming station from Ender IO and some red orchids to mass produce redstone.
