Alright, so I had a brilliant idea, maybe this has already been figured out, thus why im here. I want to figure out if I can make a light sensitive switch. My reasoning is that I am mixing engine types for the most efficiency, and I am testing out combustion engines and electrical engines, well when the combustion engine is running hot at night and I lose power to my solar arrays, and consequently my electrical engines, I want a sensor to turn off the power to my combustion engines before it sucks the remaining water out of the pipes and overheats. This way I would have a flawless and fully self automated quarry. Any ideas?

Use gates. They alone can stop a combustion engine from overheating (and they attach to buildcraft pipes. So they'd use up no space!)
Just set it so that when water is flowing through the pipe, it gives off a redstone signal. That way the engine will only work when it's got water being pumped into it.
