I have a macerator that macerates items then pipes items into a furnace, i was wondering if there's a way to change the flow of items so they either go to the furnace or straight to my chest? i know about iron pipes but they're set up in a way that i couldn't get it to work, so I'm asking if there's a different way of changing the direction.

Could you post a screenshot of your setup? That way we can see the space available and advise better. Only real way of controlling direction in a tight area would be with a diamond pipe, but that's a bit expensive.

you're probably better off with a setup like this:

this was my old setup till I hid it all behind a wall and just left the input and output chests

What exactly do you mean by that? Something like:
Lever on -> macerated stuff feeds the furnace
Lever off -> macerated stuff feed the chest?

If you want to stay with BC pipes:
Have two wooden pipes per macerator, on pulls to the furnace, the other to the chest. Feed either the one or the other with engines.
If you would want to use RP2 instead:
A transposer inline continuously powered works like a closed valve, which could change the calculation of "closest inventory".
