Help with Forestry?

Hey guys. So recently I have obtained some common walnut saplings. I planted them and used bone meal on them, then I cut the tree down. However I didn't get any walnuts. Why is that?

If I recall correctly,the walnuts can be collected once the walnuts on the tree completely ripen. I am unsure of how much time this takes,however.

Takes a long time for them to ripen, the fruit turns into a deep red/brown color.
