Having Problems with FTB

Hello im a new player to feed the beast and i kinda have a noob question

How do you place stuff on machines cause if i rightclick it opens the machine instead of placing things like a pipe or tube

There are several ways to do this (shift+right click works on most machines), but i whould say place some blocks next / behind the machine and place the pipe against that block. Afterwards remove the blocks again.
