Here's something to consider that can actually be accomplished fairly early in the game

Using either the obsidian your turtle has gathered for you or a couple buckets of lava and a dirt frame, craft a Nether portal.

Use Mystcraft to create a linking book to your overworld base, travel to the Nether and build a safe room around your portal. Create several linking books to this safe room, install a bookstand and place the overworld base linking book. Include a blank book and a Nether safe room linking book when you're exploring and use the blank book to create a placemarker linking book and jump through the Nether safe room to return to base quickly. You can use the placemarker to continue exploring/caving wherever you left off; also good for quick jumps to a village.

Use a Minium Stone and iron to create Ender Pearls, combine a few with blaze powder (collected from CinderPearl) to find the End Portal. Create a linking book to the room containing the End Portal. Travel to the End with nothing but cobble and torches. It might take several attempts, but it's possible to build a cobble walkway off the island away from the Dragon and out of her range. Suicide home, jump through the Nether safe room and return to the End with an overworld base linking book and a blank book. Follow your walkway out of range of the Dragon (some repair might be required), create an End linking book, build an End safe room (interior two blocks high, roof covered with water) and build a vanilla Endermen farm. (Some pumpkin headgear might be a nice addition while building the spawner).

Virtually unlimited Minium shards and Ender Pearls == all the iron, gold, and diamonds you need.

notable items include: unenchanted metal weapons / armor, ingots, music discs, various other vanilla items. Most important loot for me would be the soul cages ;) It is also important to note that with Thaumcraft installed, these normally have an evil aura node directly inside in the center. This means wisps will occasionally spawn outside the den, so be wary if you decide to camp near one...With enough research / materials it is possible to move the node, and use that to spawn wisps in whatever way your imagination sees fit. I'm not 100% how these affect local flux / vis, but I'm sure there is a guide within these forums.
Thaumcraft is what makes these generate, and there is ALWAYS a dark node inside them. Always.

Why suicide home? Why not linkbook home?

Only because until I'm sure I'm out of range of the Dragon (or can be quickly with my pre-built walkway) I only bring cobble and torches. But yeah, you could bring a linking book with you and hope you get out of the Dragon's range quickly.

The first thing I do on entering the End is drop down a couple of chests and stash a few stacks of ladders in them. Not so necessary with jetpacks but saves on fuel and can be used to stash some other supplies in case of draconic incidents.

I can see that working. I've had such mixed experience travelling to the End; sometimes the Dragon leaves me alone for a while other times she's right on top of me. So unless I'm ready to take her on, my goal is just to get away as quickly as I can.

Great guide but a bit inaccurate on the details and missing some things.

If you have Mystcraft installed, you can find a house with a writing desk, book sheleves, and 0-2 symbol pages on lecterns in villages
If you are in a Mystcraft age, you can find a 'library' structure with books, symbols, and a hidden chest with more symbols.
The mage tower (the glowstone and chest) has thaum loot. It's one of the best sources of knowledge fragments. And often has the firey things from thaum that can be used as torches/granades. Along with a thaum villager.
Barrows are added by Thaumcraft and commenly have it's loot. Among the loot from other mods are occasionaly symbols, Steadfast bee, anything that can be found in (bonus chests). They ALWAYS have a dark node (less it moved) so they make for great wisp grinders.
Jungle Fortress has two chests, one behind a button puzzle. (Literaly behind, break the wall)
Desert Fortress almost always have a VERY large node in them, added by thaum. (>1000 at times) I'm not sure about the jungle ones.

Also worth nothing, jungle fortresses have a lot of mossy coble, which is slow to make, and has the flux(mutato?) aspect.
The desert fortresses have a lot of chixled sandstone (magicy aspect) and smooth sandstone (precious aspect).

Bonus loot includes forestry saplings on rare occasion btw.

Of course the whole /point/ of twilight forest is that it has lots of exploration points, so I won't go into it.

best way to find strongholds (calling them "fortresses" is wrong, please stop) is to turn Rei's into the caver mode and fly around.

Fixed, thanks. And some consider caver mode cheating, I think you need op status to use it on a server don't you?
Doesn't caver mode only show you caves on your y-level so wouldn't you need to be deep underground to see them, or is there a way to change the y-level in Rei's?

well as to OP status.. no you don't. As it is a clientside mod, there is no way for the server to dictate that.
As to the second, I'm not sure, I've only fucked around with it once and I seemed to have had no trouble locating a mineshaft beneath my feet, but I'm not sure how deep that radar goes.

Sure you could make a minimap that shows everything regardless but I think Rei's respects op status. I think people are complaining about Voxelmap because it allows all players to use entity radar.
