I just started a new world with the MindCrack pack and I set all of the configs to false. Is that what I should do? Are there any advantages to having some on true?

Well I don't think you should be blindly going the configs setting everything to false. What did you actually change?

If you're trying to disable GregTech, you can do that with Edit Mod Pack in the FTB launcher itself, rather than messing with its configuration. Much easier. Not entirely sure that's what you're trying to do, though?

GregTech just offers a nice way of making Mindcraft last longer for those people who like to work towards goals.

Now what im about to say always pisses some people off but whatever. (it seems a large majority of the Greg haters out there dont know what the hell a config file is......srsly...)

The advantages of Gregtech is this, if you are the type of player who wants to have a much longer game play to reach all products (all machines in game and best weapons armor) then dont touch GregTech or just tweak it slightly.

If you are the type of person who can play in creative mode for long periods of time without getting bored, then Gregtech MIGHT not be for you.

If you look closely at the config files, GregTech made it very easy to disable parts of his mod and the file itself is very well laid out.

So be careful what you put to false and which ones you leave alone.

EDIT: What I can tell you is this, my server is a month old now, we have GregTech installed (Mindcrack Pack) and we have ONE person with endgame armor on. Only because he pulled a Nebris and used the Slag/Plat Dust combo. People bitched at first but now they love it because it makes the game last longer to them before getting bored for the day. Which out last server (Tekkit with EE installed) after a week people had 10000000 diamonds and were BORED TO DEATH!!!

After all of these replies and a good half hour of looking into the configs I have realized that I was being very ignorant. I saw somewhere that all GregTech does is make the game harder and to fix that it said to change all of the config 'trues' to 'falses'. I now have the settings that I want and I have most things on true. Thank you all for help and I'm sorry for being so ignorant.

You arnt ignorant dude, if you were you wouldn't be asking questions on here. Its just that Greg is for some WEIRD reason, a TOUCHY subject and people explode into flame wars. If as you play, you don't agree with an item or machine or recipe that GregTech changes, just change the config for that thing to False and restart your server. Its a very customizable mod.

Disabling GT via the launcher only removes GT ores and tools. It leaves any "harder" (stupidly resource intensive) recipes that DON'T depend on GT things in place, because the config file is separate from the mod itself.

God I hate Tekkit (I'm assuming everyone on here does too.) And I like your 'pulling a Nebris' comment. Thanks for the response.

Even mentioning the words "Tekkit" or "GregTech" on these forum has a 90% chance of erupting in a flamewar. This should probably be in a FAQ somewhere.

And since I just used both... *grabs popcorn*

Really? I disabled it and it seemed to remove all side effects too. If there's no GregTech mod active, nothing is going to look at the GregTech configuration. The mod has to be active for it to be able to alter recipes, including ones that don't depend on its own stuff.

Someone should probably close this thread before it gets messy...

That's not even close to being correct. Without the mod loaded by Forge, the config will sit idle and untouched, no matter what it says in it. No other mod has any reason to load Greg's configs, or the code to interpret those configs, even if they were loaded.
