My first reactor was not type I, it was type blow-up-everything. I quit that game. High risk, high reward. :)
It's hardly "High risk, high reward" if you set it up properly. You can easily set it up so that when it gets too hot, it automatically turns itself off.

I don't blame you for quitting though. I probably would have been in the "don't want to play any more" mood for a day or so if that happened to me. Then again I only tend to use reactors for making nukes now.

And assuming you get that right, it works. :) The risk is in getting it wrong. Minecraft doesn't give you many ways to do "dry runs."

Do nukes have a use besides griefing?

Try the computer cube or a creative world. Both are good ways of testing a nuclear setup.

As for nukes, we just make a few, make a trophy room for them and then use them as weapons to beat up endermen.

For IC2 power, I usually start out with a generator and batbox powering a macerator, compressor, and extractor, with the plan of upgrading the generator to a geothermal and replacing the batbox with an MFE (the batbox can go into a jetpack). I then turn the geothermal generator into a thermal generator, make a stack of cells, fill them up with lava, and that should satisfy my power needs until I can get a charcoal or biofuel boiler going.

As for the gregtech storage blocks, well, they're nice, but they're insanely expensive and pretty much overkill unless you're planning on using lightning rods or a fusion reactor. The lapis ones are cheaper, yes, but to just match an MFE's output you would need one LESU control block and 123 storage blocks. Sure, it would store a couple orders of magnitude more EU, but you really don't need buffers that large unless, again, you're messing around with fusion reactors and lightning rods.

This was the most helpful post I've read about starting off in GT. I'll continue reading the thread in the hope that I'll get gems like this one. People forget everyone doesn't know that path to getting an industrial centrifuge can be difficult for a new GT user.

Industrial centrifuges are nice, but what you really need to shoot for is an industrial blast furnace and an industrial electrolyzer so you can make titanium. That will give you access to mining drills and lasers, as well as quarries. Centrifuges are mostly used for making copper, tin, and electrum out of lava, plus a bunch of other, more specialized uses like getting helium or deuterium.

Also note that if you're going to be doing any kind of sustained processing with the electrolyzer and blast furnace, you're going to need more than one thermal generator supplying an MFE. Six of them is a good start. Also, I like to make dedicated MFEs for my high-power Gregtech devices to ensure that they don't run out of power mid-process, and also because it looks cool.

I've found that a great starting generator for gregtech is the semi fluid generator if you don't have a stable ic2 setup. Large amount of power per bucket. Also I pipe all spare creosote into it. Certainly gives my generator that extra boost from time to time, and uses up a relatively abundant/useless liquid
