I tinkered with the Direwolf20 pack (kinda added some mods and removed Modular... ForceField), but after the new version update, the changed I did are gone...

What is the good way to cope with this? Is there a way to save my pack?

When it asks whether you want to update, there's a little checkbox named "backup config files". Check it.

I did, it only backes up the config files, but doesn't remember the mods installed, guess I'll have to wait for the ultimate pack.

No pack will ever remember non-FTB mods that you installed extra. It is because they are not part of the pack.

Best way: Make a zip file of the mods you added with the mods and their configs. Upon an update just extract that zip into the corresponding folders. Removing mods should not be a problem at all, simply deleting them is enough.

The easiest way would be using multimc. It lets you import your ftb pack directly from the ftb launcher, and you can have as many instances as you want. I usually import the clean packs and then add or remove the mods in multimc...

Always keep a copy of your mods installed, so when there is pack update, you can easily restore them. I encountered the same thing with FTBBeta. It is annoying.

Be sure that when it does update that all the extra mods you've are updated to the correct version too..

This. When creating a new instance, you can import from FTB. Or you can import from folder, then chose the Direwolf20 folder. Either way, you can import your mods and config settings, then play in MultiMC.
