58 @lenscas: I dunno about the books and whatnot you're familiar with, but at least in DF, the elves send a band of merchants to the player's fort every Spring. Their ethics don't permit them to use (wooden) wagons like the humans and dwarves do, but they do use pack animals to carry their goods (and, as such, they're limited by what their animals can carry back home). They bring grown wood armor and weapons, clothing, seeds, fruit, and tame caged animals. How, precisely, they load things like caged elephants on the backs of their horses and mules is a mystery, but they do it somehow.
