49 also, how do elves in most fantasy worlds get metal? I mean, they probably won't make mines for it and the elves in fantasy worlds that I read aren't exactly the type of trading with other species.
Even if they would trade, what do they have to offer for this metal? And why would they want it in the first place as I don't think elves aren't exactly the type to work with metal, seems a bit expensive to have another species come over each time something broke, especially considering it is probably a trip that takes a day or more.

I'm sorry but no. In a lot of those books alchemy does not even exist. I even have books where magic is so turned down you are kind of surprised if you read that someone throws a fireball or does other basic stuff like that.
