I wouldn't be surprised if it has to do with the fact that it is used inside an R4 (because ds games are expansive) and thus might have something that could have been seen as bootable.
I especially think it is something like that because as soon as I removed it my computer unfroze

85 Lens, you should replace one of the other characters in your font with a straight-up Greek phi. $, maybe? Or |?

Come to think of it, you could stick a discrete phi into a lot of characters and still have them be recognizable.
