My guess is that he didn't look where he was going and fell in a pool of water without a way to get out where it then froze to death. Sorry, I wasn't there when it happened to rescue it, I only saw the result.

*You help me to get it to the lab, inside it a lot of tubes filled with some kind of black liquid are everywhere and lead to a central machine together with thick cables. We put the block of ice in the central machine and I turn it on, the doors of the machine close, the liquid starts to flow in the machine and you can feel the energy that goes to the cables as your hairs are getting static(?). The water of the ice cube slowly drips from underneath the doors.*
And now we wait.

73 In the machine, slowly the oil replaces its blood and give life back to its organs. Don't worry, you won't notice a thing once it is complete.
