It stores energy by bending a couple of upright strips of what appears to be bamboo, kind of like two half bow limbs. There's a string tied to the top end of each, and those strings are wrapped around a drum with a long stick sticking out of it with a spoon on the end. Pull it back, the bamboo strips bend toward the middle, release, projectile goes flying.
