I thought golems only traveled a little ways from their attachment point, but the straw golem seems to be happy to zip around every time he "finds" work to do. His work radius seems to reset each time he does stuff, so he ends up pulling up stuff that I didn't want him to harvest. I have a dumb straw golem in a melon farm, and he keeps finding his way over to my flax, corn, wheat and vegetable gardens to uproot those. I tried building a fence and a gate to keep him contained, but he can use a gate, so just walks out of the melon patch. I ended up making a gate on the far side of the melon farm so he can't wander out, but it is a pain to walk all the way around just to get into the farm.

How do you keep a golem contained in an area since they apparently can use doors and gates?

have the chest with the wooden golem built into the wall and recessed 1 in. put a wall block 1 block forward and one block above the chest. You can then access the chest from behind and golems can put items in from the front, but they can't jump over the chest + block to escape.

Seems pretty s8mple to just replace the dumb golem with a smart one so it replants and have a herd of golems roaming free.

I just use cobble fences and since i always wear the boots of the traveler I can easily jump on top of the fence to get in and out.

I blame the parents.
Dicipline them at an early age ;)

I tend to use trap doors rather than gates on a stone wall.
Right click and it lays flat, 1 block above the ground. Giving me the height needed to vault over the wall.
Another right click to fold it back in place flush aginst the wall.
