I'm playing the Direwolf20 modpack under 1.6.4 (finally got it to work!) and came across a small area in some forested hills where I get drawn in (like a magnet pulling in a piece of metal), I hover for a little while shaking, and then am thrown high up into the sky and then fall and die ("...fell from a high place.") There's a kind of hole in the ground and it looks like blocks have been randomly removed and replaced. It's like the world is eroding (in a small limited area). I don't see any strange blocks, though there is an are of shadow (could just be because it's a hole).

Has anyone seen this? What is it? When it first happened it took me be surprise and killed my pretty quickly. So all the stuff I was carrying (and I had just found some mana beans and an ender lily seed!) is sitting in a grave. I'm having a hard time getting my stuff back. I can morph into a chicken to keep from falling to my death (bat morph can't fly), but it's very hard to maneuver. I set the game to not allow cheat commands, so I'm a bit stuck. Any ideas?

Open up NEI, make sure your set to cheat mode in the options menu, then click on the "C" in the top left to put yourself in creative mode so you can fly around and get your stuff without taking damage.

Welcome to TC4! You just met your new best friend, the Hungry Node! The Hungry node is Really hungry, and will eat almost anything it can suck up, and is actually great as a trash disposal, because while he does eat pretty much everything, he also takes it into himself as aspects, making this Hungry Friend great for recharging Wands later on, assuming you can "tame" him to eat only what you give him!

Sounds like a hungry node from Thaumcraft, you can disabled the effects in the config file...or encase it in obsidian

Edit, ninja'd

Ahhh! So it's not a glitch, but a feature. Never heard of a "hungry node" before. Not fun.[DOUBLEPOST=1393137148][/DOUBLEPOST]

Thanks. I didn't realize you could use NEI to do that even if you turned cheat codes of when creating a new world. I was able to get my stuff back. Thanks.

Congratulations! You've just found yourself a Thaumcraft hungry node! I think these can be made a little less dangerous in the config file. In game, they can be broken (look for a small, faint shimmer in the middle) or you can feed it stuff & it will gain & hold more aspects. I don't think it can destroy obsidian, so you can wall it off & save it for later.

Curious: Since I haven't run across more than a handful of these and none recently, will the aspects you throw in regenerate? so if I throw in a bunch of dirt will the hungry node start holding and regenerating Terra? Or is it just a nice way to convert dirt 'n things into aspects to recharge with?

Lucky you that you found your first hungry node in a not too dangerous place...
Mine was in cave, on my first mining trip, after I found a portal gun, over lava.

Doesn't the hungry node eat you rather then throw you in the air?

All I can say is what it did to me, was draw me in, like a tiny black hole, hold me there for about ten seconds, then shoot me straight up like I was atop a geyser or a really strong updraft.

This is the correct behavior. If you get stuck, you're basically dead unless you have some sort of item that lets you fly.

Longfall boots or other fall damage negating items will also save you.

Well, if the node manages to kill you while you're stuck inside it before you get thrown, they won't save you. Also, the node, if big enough, will draw you right back in even if you hit the ground safely.

So, your saying these nodes if big enough will just toy with you until you die if you have longfall boots but cant fly to escape?

I don't know if it can kill you other than by fall damage. If the fall doesn't kill you, you have time to break it before it throws you in the air again. It throws you high enough that you can move out of range while falling. Much more survivable than unstable ingots, & you even have some chance of recovering you stuff before it eats them.

Honestly? No idea if it regenerates, I haven't had a chance to actually catch one. Starting to think of strong blocks that are able to be exchanged with a wand for my "Ceci n'est pas une jarred node" attempt. Apparently one can use the wand cap on IC2 Reinforced Stone, which is supposed to be pretty strong, so that sounds like a good first step for my tests.

You can also morph yourself into a chicken, if you have morph installed. Then you just float down and as you do you can guide yourself away from the node.

Pfft, real men don't need to become a chicken to not take fall damage! Nor do we wear fancy boots that clash with the rest of our outfits!
We just take a chicken, scrape some skin off of it and scan it's DNA to learn how they say "Neither the fall nor a sudden stop at the end shall harm me!" so well. Reports indicate that it may have something to do with being tiny, lightweight, and fluffy, but WHO CARES, WE HAVE SCIENCE ON OUR SIDE!
