In the quest to breed pretty much the top energy-producing tree, I've run into a weird problem. So far, this is the best sapling I have:

The gigantic and 4x4 traits only comes from the Giant Sequoia tree which (as far as I can tell) can only be obtained by villager trading. I recently read that it isn't supposed to be obtainable at all, but my ~150 emeralds aren't coming back and I plan on using this thing :) . My problem, however, is this:

The tree on the left (disregarding Natura, BoP, and MFR trees) is from the saplings I have above. The huge tree is the pure Giant Sequoia and the one on the right is a pure White Willow for reference. As you can see, the Willow with the gigantic trait, while larger than normal, doesn't even come close to matching the height of the Sequoia. This is my first real venture into tree breeding, so I don't know if this is normal. But has anyone else had any luck breeding with the gigantic trait?

And while I'm at it, is the White Willow generally considered a good/the best tree for sapling drops? I kinda just assumed since their leaves extend to the ground, but not sure.

is the problem that the leaves of the sequoia can't reach the leaves of the white willow, thus unable to breed them together?
if so, you could try digging a bit under ground, plant the sequoia sapplings there and then grow them. this way the leaves of both trees should get closed to eachother.

you could also ofcourse bring the white willow up, but then you'd also need to bring your bees with you

That's not the issue, Yusunoha - read his post. He already succeeded breeding them together. He just placed them next to each other for comparison.

@ shez: Yes, this is normal. Every tree has a shape that's unique to it, and that shape his modified by the height trait in its own way. An apple oak, for example, gains one extra wood block on average for every increase of the height trait. However, if you were to change the giant sequoia's height trait, you'd notice that the differences are far larger between the steps. But even then, if you gave it the smallest possible height trait, it would still tower over vanilla trees.

The trick in making your perfect tree is not only getting the traits, but also finding the right base tree for your intended application. The willow is indeed extremely good for biomass by default, but not so much for wood. Also, with all proper traits applied, another tree might end up better in the end - because that depends on how the specific shape of that tree scales with the height trait (and possibly others). Just because the willow is good by default doesn't mean another tree can't outscale it for biomass (though admittedly I doubt this is the case, and if so, the difference isn't large).

Very useful info. Thanks!!
