Hi all,

I recently had the idea of making a "generic" achievement book (using an HQM achivement book) for one of the modpacks (like Infinity). Its purpose would be to teach the average player how to use the major mods. By teach I mean how to get started in a modpack, show them what it does, and how to progress through the mods themselves. The rewards built in for the quests would be nothing major, probably either a small amount of the mod's resources or just cosmetic blocks.

I find that one of my problems when playing with a new mod is a constant need to reference the wiki to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing to progress. (One of my favorite things is when a mod has a reference book such as Botania). While you can search recipes in game, it doesn't explain which blocks do what or what to make when. To me, it becomes frustrating having to switch back and forth between the game and my browser, taking away from gameplay. So my hope would be to solve this issue.

Does something like this already exist? (A quick google search got me no where.) I'd be happy to make an achievement book like this, if there's a desire for it to be made. Let me know what you think please!

There have been many attempts at this. When HQM came out, it was all the rage to make "learning" maps. Unfortunately, none of those came to fruition due to the massive undertaking it was going to become and the fact that mods are always updating and changing. You could make a tutorial map, and by the time you got it done, a new version would have been put out to fix bugs and would make your instructions moot.

The closest we ever got to something like this was the FTB:MotM pack for Botania. I wish you much luck.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, mods updating was the main issue I saw with making the achievement book. If I do manage to do this it'd be using the Hardcore Questing Mode mod (achievement book). I wouldn't make a tutorial map, rather just have the book be a stand-alone for players who want to use it. It'd be broken down in sections per mod meaning Botania has its own section, Applied Energistics has its own section, etc. Basically, for example, if someone hasn't made an ME storage system before, this would guide them through what to make in what order without having to look it up outside of the game.

I have yet to decide if I'm going to actually go through with it (considering the massive number of mods), however I'd like as much input from players as I can get about doing so. Perhaps at this point it'd be more worth waiting until a new pack comes out that many won't be familiar with. I figure by now most players know the ins and outs of most mods in packs like Infinity.

Don't mean to be discouraging, but when one of the HQM mod developers tried this, it didn't happen:

It would seem that all of the "Let's build a map or a series of maps" thing faded last year. We were still on 1.6.4 packs at the time.

Again, I wish you all the best of luck, just make sure you are aware that even mod makers gave up on this idea, and it took a lot of the FTB team to make the FotM pack.

Personally, I would hope that more mod makers would make better in game documentation for their mods. Botania has the best in game book I have seen yet. It's well laid out, and is easy to navigate. I would love it if more mod makers tried to do this, thus not having to switch back and forth between wiki/guides and the game.
